Board of Directors


BARRY SLOANE, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Mr. Sloane is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Newtek Business Services, Inc. Prior to joining Newtek Business Services, Mr. Sloane was a Managing Director of Smith Barney, Inc. where he directed the Commercial and Residential Real Estate Securitization Unit and, prior to that, he was national sales manager for institutional mortgage and asset backed securities sales. Mr. Sloane was founder and President of Aegis Capital Markets, a consumer loan origination and securitization business. Additionally, he was Senior Vice President of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, where he was responsible for directing sales of mortgage-backed securities and was a senior mortgage security sales person and trader for Bear Stearns, L.F. Rothschild, E.F. Hutton and Paine Webber.

DAVID BECK
Formerly the Chairman and CEO of USB, Inc., a thrift holding company specializing in the sale and processing of credit card transactions for merchants. Mr. Beck co-founded the company in 1992, growing revenues to approximately $60 million before the company was sold in 1998. Mr. Beck has over 35 years of banking experience. Mr. Beck is also a Newtek Experienced Market Expert.


JEFFREY M. SCHOTTENSTEIN
During the past 30 years, Mr. Schottenstein has been a Director of Schottenstein Investment, a diversified investment holding company with $650 million in assets, Vice President of Schottenstein Stores' Value City Stores Division (NYSE symbol VCD) and CEO of Schottenstein Realty Company, which specializes in the investment and restructuring of companies. Mr. Schottenstein has been involved in the capitalization and restructuring of numerous retail enterprises, including Weiboldts' Department Stores, Chicago, Illinois; Strauss Auto Parts, New York, New York; Valley Fair Discount Stores, New Jersey; Steinbach Stores and others. Along with his investors, Jeff Schottenstein has successfully acquired Bell Supply Company (retail oil and gas equipment supply company based in Kilgore, Texas) and Omni Exploration Company, the first successful Chapter 11 reorganization of an oil and gas service company in the United States.

CHRISTOPHER PAYAN
Mr. Payan currently serves as senior vice president, co-chief operating officer, chief financial officer, secretary and treasurer of Emerging Vision, Inc. (EVI) (Nasdaq: ISEE), a company involved in the operation and franchising of retail optical stores in the United States under the name of Sterling Optical. EVI is one of the largest chains of retail optical stores and one of the largest franchise optical chains in the country. From March 1995 through July 2001, Mr. Payan worked for Arthur Andersen LLP, where he provided various audit, accounting, operational consulting and advisory services to various small and mid-sized private and public companies in various industries. Mr. Payan is also a certified public accountant.

MICHAEL SCHWARTZ
Mr. Schwartz is a Partner at Wolf Popper LLP. He is a 1988 graduate of Brooklyn College (City University of New York) where he received a B.S. cum laude in Business Management and Finance. After graduating Brooklyn Law School in 1992, where he earned a Dean's Merit Scholarship, he has specialized in securities and antitrust class action litigation and shareholder derivative/corporate governance litigation. In 1993, he was admitted to the bars of the State of New York and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and in 1999, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr. Schwartz joined Wolf Popper LLP in 1998 and became a partner in 2003. He began his law career at Pomerantz Haudek Block & Grossman as an Associate specializing in securities and antitrust class action litigation and shareholder derivative litigation.

SAL MULIA
Sal Mulia began his career in Finance in 1980 with General Electric's Financial Services Division, GE Capital. In various assignments he was responsible for developing new businesses as well as creating innovative loan and lease products. In the capacity of lead banker, Mr. Mulia led the acquisition and syndication of $4.0 billion of loan/lease receivables, and was instrumental in developing the business plan for GE Capital's entry into SBA lending. Since 1993 Sal has been a principal in RTM Financial Services Inc. ("RTM"), an investment and advisory firm dedicated to helping small businesses. In an advisory role, he created Pitney Bowes SBA Lending Unit, and was responsible for loan portfolio acquisitions. RTM is a principal and equity investor in leasing/lending companies and R.E. partnerships and maintains close relationships within the banking community.

GORDON L. SCHROEDER
Mr. Schroeder has extensive experience as a senior human resources executive.Mr. Schroeder served as Executive Vice President, Human Resources for Fiserv, Inc and served as Senior Vice President – Global Human Resources and Leadership Development for Maritz, Inc. Prior to that, he served as a senior human resources  executive at GE .

BARRY SLOANE, CHAIRMAN & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
From July 1995 through January 1998, Mr. Sloane was the President of the Sloane Organization, LLC, an investment banking, consulting and advisory firm based in New York City. From September 1993 through July 1995, Mr. Sloane was a Managing Director of Smith Barney, Inc. While there, he directed the Commercial and Residential Real Estate Securitization Unit and, prior to that, was National Sales Manager for Institutional Mortgage and Asset Backed Securities sales. From April 1991 through September 1993, he was founder and President of Aegis Capital Markets, a consumer loan origination and securitization business which was eventually taken public with the name "Aegis Consumer Funding." From October 1988 through March 1991, Mr. Sloane was Senior Vice President of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, where he was responsible for directing sales of Mortgage-backed Securities. From August 1982 to September 1988, Mr. Sloane was a senior mortgage security sales person and trader for Bear Stearns, L.F. Rothschild, E.F. Hutton and Paine Webber.

SETH A. COHEN, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Mr. Cohen has served as Chief Financial Officer since September 1, 2007. Mr. Cohen has previously served as Senior Vice President of Finance  since March, 2007, Executive Vice President of Capital Markets since January, 2005 and Vice President for Capital Markets since June, 2000. Mr. Cohen has twenty years experience in corporate and municipal finance. Prior to Newtek, from September, 1998 to May, 2000, Mr. Cohen was Director of the Mayor's Office of Pensions and Public Finance for the City of New York.

CRAIG J. BRUNET, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER
Mr. Brunet currently serves as an Executive Vice President and the Chief Information Officer of Newtek Business Services, Inc. In addition, Mr. Brunet is responsible for strategic planning and marketing on a company-wide basis. Prior to joining Newtek, Mr. Brunet was Chairman and CEO of Harvest Strategies, a strategic consulting firm, and was responsible for developing and implementing corporate strategic plans for its clients on a global basis. Mr. Brunet began his career at South Central Bell Telephone Company and was promoted to AT&T Corporate where he held varying responsibilities in marketing, product development, finance, special bids, National Account Management, and Client Education and Training. He also held the position of Director of Strategic Planning. In 1989, Mr. Brunet became Executive Vice President of Entergy Corporation and was accountable for managing and directing the overall Entergy System retail and wholesale marketing effort, including strategy development, policy preparation and administration, market development, and market analysis and research. During his tenure with Entergy, he served as Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He also served on the Board of Directors of Entergy Enterprises guiding decisions on unregulated activities, including strategic acquisition of and investments in generation and distribution, and new technology assets domestically and internationally.

ANDREW E. LEWIN, CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER

Prior to joining Newtek, Mr. Lewin served as general counsel to Fusion Telecommunications International, Inc. and took Fusion through the public offering process. Mr. Lewin also worked in venture capital and investment banking, and was a Senior Vice President of First Albany Corporation and a senior technology investment banker in the New York office. He practiced law as a corporate and securities lawyer from 1985-1995. Mr. Lewin is a member of the New York Bar and an alumnus of Columbia University School of Law.

DEREK DEPUYDT
MERCHANT PROCESSING
Mr. DePuydt currently serves as President of Universal Processing Services of WI, LLC. He has over 11 years of experience in various positions within the credit card industry. Previous to Newtek Electronic Payment Processing, Mr. DePuydt held various financial roles within Universal Savings Bank, which was later purchased by Fifth-Third Bank. He was responsible for budgeting / forecasting and overall financial analysis. Mr. DePuydt holds a BBA with majors in Finance and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.

PETER DOWNS
BUSINESS LENDING
Prior to joining Newtek, Mr. Downs spent the last sixteen years in various small business lending roles within the banking industry. Since 1990, he was employed with European American Bank ("EAB"), where he held various positions including New Business Development Officer for Small Business Lending and Group Manager of Retail Small Business Lending which encompassed the underwriting and servicing of the bank's small business loan portfolio.
With EAB's acquisition by Citibank, Mr. Downs was asked to run the bank's SBA lending portfolio in New York, and most recently was named the National Director of SBA lending, coordinating the bank's SBA underwriting and sales efforts in all Citibank marketplaces across the country. In addition to his banking experience, he has been involved in several non-profit small business advisory boards, and has been a member of the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders (NAGGL) Regional Technical Issues Committee.

ROBERT P. CICHON
WEB HOSTING AND DATA STORAGE
Robert P. Cichon, President of CrystalTechTM Web Hosting joined Newtek as the VP of Technical Operations for Crystaltech Web Hosting Inc. in late 2005. He has been in the technology business since 1990 with a strong background in cutting edge internet / financial institution information delivery. Before joining Newtek Business Services, he spent over 8 years working with American Express teams based in several locations worldwide in the pursuit of advanced technology platforms. He holds both Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Information Systems.
